The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders has cautioned party members to stop premature presidential campaign activities and focus on supporting government’s work.
The warning came after a meeting between the Council and President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, May 29, 2026. Talks centered on party unity, internal discipline, and backing the government’s “Resetting Agenda.”
In a statement released after the meeting, the Council said it was concerned about reports of early campaigning by some individuals and groups. It noted that such moves could create division and distract from key governance priorities.
“At this critical stage of national reconstruction and renewal, every member of the Party is expected to devote his or her energies, resources, and commitment to supporting the Government’s efforts to reset the country and improve the lives of Ghanaians, rather than engaging in activities that have the potential to create division, distraction, or unnecessary internal competition,” the Council stated.
The Council cited Article 42 of the NDC Constitution, which states that timelines for electing a presidential candidate are set by the National Executive Committee (NEC). Until the NEC releases a timetable and guidelines for primaries, no individual or group is allowed to campaign, either directly or indirectly.
It has directed all members involved in such activities to stop immediately. This includes campaigning, mobilization, endorsements, and other related political actions.
“The time for internal contests will come. For now, our collective responsibility is to serve the nation and successfully implement the mandate entrusted to us,” the Council added.
The NDC is urging members to prioritize party unity and the delivery of its mandate to Ghanaians.
