Deputy Minister for Health, Hon. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, says the Maternal Mortality Action and Response Program (MMARP) has intensified its engagements across regions of Ghana as part of collective efforts to reduce maternal mortality.
According to the Deputy Minister, over the past few months, the MMARP team has engaged health professionals, traditional leaders, communities and other key stakeholders on strategies to improve maternal healthcare delivery.
She explained that a key part of the regional engagements has been visits to health facilities, where the team has listened directly to doctors, nurses, midwives and facility managers about the realities they face on the frontline.
"From challenges with infrastructure, equipment and staffing to referral systems and other gaps affecting maternal healthcare delivery, these engagements have provided valuable insights into what needs to be strengthened," she said.
Dr. Ayensu-Danquah noted that the program has also engaged traditional leaders and communities because improving maternal health goes beyond what happens within the walls of a hospital.
"We have also engaged traditional leaders and communities because improving maternal health requires more than what happens within the walls of a hospital. It requires a collective response from the health system, communities, leadership and all stakeholders," she stressed.
She reiterated the core message of the program, that no woman should lose her life while giving birth.
"The message remains clear: no woman should lose her life while giving birth. MMARP is about listening to the challenges, understanding the realities and taking action to save lives. The work continues," she added.
