Police arrest mother and son with 147 parcels of Indian hemp, Tramadol in Dormaa Ahenkro

The Bono Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit has arrested two suspects for unlawful possession of suspected narcotics and restricted drugs at Dormaa Ahenkro.

The suspects are Mary Awuni, 66, and her son Maxwell Akukah, 29. They were picked up at Kumi Daa Street (KDS), a suburb of the Dormaa Central Municipality.

According to a press release dated September 4, 2026, from the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Sunyani/BR, the arrest was made during an intelligence-led operation.

A search of their rooms led to the retrieval of 147 yellow compressed slabs wrapped in sellotape suspected to be Indian hemp, 270 boxes and 329 blisters of assorted Tramadol, 14 blisters of Rohypnol, GH¢87,751 and CFA 2,000.

The police said Mary Awuni was found with a metal trunk containing 14 blisters of Rohypnol, GH¢72,612 and CFA 2,000. She told police the items and money were given to her by a man in Accra for delivery to another person in Côte d'Ivoire, but admitted ownership of items found in her room.

Her son, Maxwell Akukah, was arrested in a separate room where the suspected Indian hemp, Tramadol and GH¢15,139 were found. He claimed the items belonged to his brother Anthony, who is said to be outside Dormaa Ahenkro.

The two suspects are in police custody assisting investigations, while the police continue processes towards prosecution of persons found culpable.

The Bono Regional Police Command assured the public of its commitment to fighting narcotics-related offences and urged the public to continue providing credible information to support the police.
