The Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association has hinted at a possible increase in poultry prices ahead of the Christmas festivities due to rising production costs.
According to the Association, the cost of feed ingredients, freight charges and imported additives continues to put pressure on farmers.
Chief Executive Officer of the Association, Ali Mohammed, told journalists that if the current trend continues, poultry products may see a slight upward adjustment in price.
He explained that key inputs such as maize, soya and other feed ingredients are becoming more expensive, while shipping costs and foreign exchange pressures are also rising, especially with the festive season approaching.
"If the trend of the major input continues to go up, likewise the additives which are all imported, because the forex is not coming down and knowing a festivity season is coming, dollar will not come down, freight costs are going up, certainly we may see some slight adjustment of poultry products, prices upwards," he said.
Mr. Mohammed however dismissed projections of a 15% price hike, describing such figures as speculative.
He noted that pricing decisions differ from farm to farm based on cost structure and profit margins.
"Each farm and its profit margin and the base price that they want to adjust to and we cannot give the kind of percentage raw 15 percent, it can be very speculative, we can't do that," he added.
