The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has welcomed the latest reduction in DStv subscription packages by MultiChoice Ghana, now Canal+ MultiChoice, describing it as real value for Ghanaian families.
Speaking at a joint press conference by Government and MultiChoice on DStv packages in Accra, Sam George said the negotiations which started in June last year were driven by a simple question: how to put content in the homes of Ghanaian families at an affordable price.
According to the Minister, the sports package, which is the most sought after by Ghanaians, has dropped significantly from about GH¢875 to GH¢563 and now to GH¢250.
"Any family that was doing 850 or 875 at the time this administration came into office and is going to pay 250 now is going to be saving over 500 cedis. That's more than a 60% reduction in what they used to pay," he stated.
He thanked Canal+ and MultiChoice Ghana, including GOtv and DStv teams, for working with the Ministry to arrive at the new pricing.
Breaking down the new packages, the Minister explained:
- *GH¢50 a month* gives access to 90 channels - less than GH¢2 a day
- *GH¢100 a month* gives over 120 channels - just over GH¢3 a day
- *GH¢250 a month* gives all sports, news and entertainment with over 120+ channels - about GH¢8 a day
Sam George said this time the reduction is clear in cash value, unlike the previous announcement which faced criticism over value interpretation.
He also disclosed that once clearance is received from the Attorney-General, Government will from November 5th begin a massive clampdown on anti-piracy.
"This gives us a basis... for 50 cedis you have access to content. I think that this represents real value," he added.
