The Head of the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, *Professor Vincent Boima*, is calling on Ghanaians to take a more proactive approach to their health by prioritizing preventive care and healthy lifestyles.
Speaking at the 14th Annual Scientific Conference of the Medical Laboratory Science Students Association, Prof. Boima expressed concern over the growing burden of chronic diseases in the country.
According to him, a significant number of these conditions are directly tied to lifestyle choices, especially among the youth. Poor diet, lack of exercise, and risky health practices are fueling the rise in preventable illnesses.
The Professor also issued a strong warning against the use of herbal medications and aphrodisiacs, stating that they are among the major contributors to heart disease cases currently being recorded in hospitals.
On kidney health, Prof. Boima said environmental factors are playing a pivotal role in the increasing number of young people suffering from kidney failure. He stressed that early detection is key, and urged the public to go for periodic medical checkups to catch any kidney problems early before they become severe.
He concluded that shifting focus from treatment to prevention will help reduce the pressure on the health system and improve overall wellbeing in Ghana.
