Parts of Weija in Accra have been hit by severe flooding after the controlled release of water from the Weija Dam. The spillage has submerged hundreds of homes, forcing many residents to abandon their houses and leaving thousands stranded.
Ghana Water Limited (GWL) said it started releasing excess water from the dam because levels had risen beyond safe operating limits, creating fears of a possible overflow. In a statement released on May 27, 2026, the company noted that the dam’s water level had gone above 48 feet. As a safety measure to protect the structure, all spill gates were opened.
According to GWL, controlled spillage is a routine procedure used during heavy rains when large inflows push the dam beyond its capacity.
The release has caused widespread flooding in nearby communities. Several people have been displaced, while others are trying to rescue their belongings as water covers homes and roads.
Emergency teams are expected to step up response efforts as authorities work to determine the full scale of the damage and assist those affected.
