Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, is calling for urgent action on drainage after touring parts of the constituency affected by heavy rains and flooding.
The MP visited several flood-hit communities Monday morning to assess the extent of damage and interact with residents whose homes and shops were impacted. He inspected some of the worst affected areas and heard firsthand accounts of losses caused by the downpour.
Speaking after the tour, Hon. Shaib said the incident has once again exposed the need for lasting solutions to the area’s flooding problems, especially better drainage systems.
“The situation once again underscores the urgent need for practical and long-term solutions to flooding, particularly the improvement of drainage systems within our communities,” he said.
He assured residents that their safety is his main concern and promised to engage key agencies to ensure a rapid response.
“The safety and wellbeing of our people remain my utmost priority. I remain committed to engaging the appropriate authorities and stakeholders to ensure swift attention is given to the challenges caused by the rains and to work toward lasting interventions that will protect lives and property,” he stated.
As a first step, the MP said he will write to the Municipal Chief Executive to request the deployment of DRIP machines to clear silt from major drains in the constituency.
To prevent delays, Hon. Shaib added that he is ready to cover the cost of fuel for the desilting exercise. “I am also willing to support the operation with fuel to ensure the exercise is carried out effectively and without delay,” he said.
The visit follows recent torrential rains that triggered flooding in parts of Weija-Gbawe, leaving several residents displaced and property damaged.
