The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) says about 30 galamsey-related deaths have been recorded across mining districts in the Eastern Region from January 2026 to date.
Deputy Regional NADMO Director in charge of Technical and Disaster Risk Reduction, Emmanuel Konja Tullah, disclosed this when he visited a mining site in the region following a recent pit collapse.
According to him, the latest incident was not a case of an uncovered pit, but a situation where some individuals went behind the concession and site owners to dig underground after the main load had been picked and washed elsewhere, leading to the collapse.
Mr. Tullah said NADMO has recorded no less than 30 such deaths within the year and called on concession owners to strengthen security and oversight measures to prevent illegal entry into their sites.
He said mining companies must ensure strict coordination and put proper security and safety measures in place, including covering pits, to prevent further deaths.
He added that NADMO will partner with other agencies to intensify public education on the dangers of illegal mining.
