The Office of the Attorney General has filed an opposition to a bail application by Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman *Bernard Antwi-Boasiako*, popularly known as *Chairman Wontumi*, while he appeals his conviction and sentence.
In an affidavit submitted on *Tuesday, August 11*, the AG’s office asked the High Court to reject the request. Wontumi’s lawyers had filed the application on *Friday, August 7*, seeking bail for him pending the outcome of his appeal.
According to the Attorney General, the grounds Wontumi raised in his appeal do not show any real likelihood of success. The AG argued that the claims made in Paragraphs 6 to 11 of Wontumi’s supporting affidavit are not backed by the appeal itself.
“*The grounds of appeal contained in the Exhibit CB2, the appeal... discloses no reasonable chance of success*,” the affidavit stated.
The AG also raised concerns about Wontumi absconding. It told the court that the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman poses a *significant flight risk* and urged the judge to consider that in ruling on bail.
“*Contrary to the averments in Paragraphs 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18 and 20 of the affidavit in support of the motion, the Applicant constitutes a significant flight risk*,” the AG’s office said.
The court is yet to rule on the bail application.
