At least 22 out of about 56 mortuary facilities in the Ashanti Region are operating without licences.
The disclosure was made by the Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency, MoFFA.
According to the Acting Director of the Agency, Mavis Twumwaa Appiah, an inspection exercise is currently underway across the region to identify facilities that are operating illegally or below standard.
Speaking in an interview, Ms. Appiah said officials are visiting every mortuary to assess compliance with health, safety, environmental and operational requirements.
"As it stands, we have about 22 facilities that are unlicensed. We are going to each and every mortuary that is not licensed and does not meet standards. So we go through this whole week," she said.
She explained that facilities that fail to meet the required standards will be barred from accepting new bodies until they rectify the lapses identified.
The Agency expects the affected facilities to fix the issues before a follow-up inspection is conducted.
Ms. Appiah added that so far, some mortuary facilities in Asante Mampong, Effiduase and Juaben have been shut down.
