Bagbin Assures Chief Imam: Anti-LGBTQ Bill Will Be Reconsidered and Passed Before Friday’s Recess

Speaker of Parliament, *Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin*, has assured the *National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu*, that the *Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill*, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ bill, will be reconsidered and passed again before Parliament rises for recess on *Friday, July 31, 2026*.

Speaking during a meeting with the National Chief Imam, Speaker Bagbin said the House was committed to concluding work on the bill in this meeting.

*“We will reconsider and pass the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill again before we go on recess on Friday,”* the Speaker assured.

However, Hon. Bagbin expressed dissatisfaction with the *sentencing provisions* in the bill in its current form. He said that was the main reason the bill will be brought back to the floor.

*“I am not satisfied with the sentencing provisions in the bill in its current form,”* he stated. *“As a result, it will be reintroduced for further consideration of three key clauses.”*

The Speaker did not specify the three clauses, but noted that the review is to ensure the law is both firm and just in dealing with the issues it seeks to address.

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill seeks to criminalize LGBTQ activities, as well as the promotion, advocacy and funding of such activities in Ghana. It was previously passed by Parliament in 2024 but was not assented to.

The National Chief Imam has been one of the prominent religious leaders advocating for the passage of the bill.

Parliament is expected to rise for recess on Friday, July 31, 2026.
