Residents and businesses at Jakala Extension in the Bole-Bamboi District can now heave a sigh of relief following the commissioning of a new 100KVA transformer to resolve persistent low voltage and erratic power supply in the area.
The GH¢200,000 intervention was secured through the lobbying efforts of the Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi who doubles as the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Dr. Alhaji Yusif Sulemana, after numerous complaints from community members that low voltage was affecting household activities and crippling local businesses.
With the installation, the neighbourhood's grid infrastructure has been doubled from one transformer to two, expanding power stability across the catchment area.
The new transformer, together with a specialized installation team from the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) regional office in Wa, was procured after persistent follow-ups by the MP with the power authorities. Pre-installation testing and formal commissioning was done on September 15, 2026.
Speaking during the installation, the Technician Superintendent for NEDCo in charge of Bole and its environs, Mr. Adam Sulley Bantasi, said the new asset will immediately improve supply.
"Initially, the one that was serving the area was a 200 KVA transformer serving all the way up to where this new one is. Once we have relieved the other one, which is an upgrade, this 100 KVA unit will sufficiently power this catchment area," he explained.
He noted that while the intervention brings relief, Bole's fast-growing population still requires more investment. The township currently has about 105 transformers serving various suburbs, but more are urgently needed to match rising demand. He disclosed that the Bole office is pursuing grant proposals to augment distribution.
Mr. Bantasi also cautioned residents against engaging unauthorized electricians and tampering with transformer fuses, warning that such acts expose the equipment to damage.
"A fuse blows to protect the transformer, which is a vulnerable asset not easily acquired from the market. Sometimes in the whole Upper West Area or head office, we don't have a spare transformer in stock. When a transformer fails, the whole neighbourhood suffers," he said, urging residents to report faults, dangling tree branches and rotten poles early for prompt action.
The commissioning is seen as another milestone in Hon. Dr. Yusif Sulemana's drive to improve utility infrastructure in the Bole-Bamboi constituency.
