The Court of Appeal has acquitted and discharged former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre, MASLOC, *Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu*, overturning her previous conviction and 10-year jail term.
In a judgment delivered on Thursday, the appellate court ruled that the state failed to prove the case against her beyond reasonable doubt. The decision effectively sets aside the guilty verdicts handed down earlier by an Accra High Court.
Ms. Tamakloe-Attionu had appealed both her conviction and the fact that she was tried and sentenced in absentia. Her lawyers argued that the charges were defective and that the prosecution did not meet the required burden of proof.
The former MASLOC boss was extradited from the United States to Ghana on June 9, 2026, and began serving a 10-year sentence at the Nsawam Medium Security Female Prison on June 24, 2026.
She had left for the US in 2021 with court permission for medical treatment while her trial was still ongoing but did not return.
In 2024, the High Court found her guilty of several offences, including causing financial loss to the state and stealing, relating to alleged mismanagement of state funds during her tenure as MASLOC CEO.
With Thursday’s ruling, the Court of Appeal has cleared her of all charges, stating that the prosecution’s evidence did not meet the criminal standard needed for conviction.
