The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has charged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to take charge of security in their areas instead of leaving it entirely to the security agencies.
According to him, MMDCEs, as heads of their District Security Councils (DISEC), have a critical role to play in preventing crime and ensuring peace, and cannot afford to act as bystanders.
He said effective security depends on early detection of threats, timely intelligence gathering and close collaboration between local authorities and the security agencies on the ground.
The Minister made the call in Kumasi during a High-Level Training Programme on Ghana’s Security and Intelligence Agencies Act, 2024 (Act 1168) for MMDCEs in the Ashanti Region.
He stressed the need for coordination and information sharing among agencies to avoid fragmentation in the security architecture.
“Let's coordinate and stop the fragmentation. I know, especially the Regional Police Commander is here, and I can see the Regional Fire representative and the liaison for National Security. Please, information sharing is key, and all of us can attest to that,” Muntaka said.
He commended the Director-General of the National Signal Bureau for the effective collaboration with the CID and other agencies in tracking and arresting individuals who misuse social media to cause insecurity.
The training was to deepen MMDCEs' understanding of Act 1168 and strengthen collaboration between local government and Ghana's security and intelligence agencies.
