NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says excessive state control is behind falling standards in Ghana’s mission schools.
During a visit to the Christian Council of Ghana on June 13, 2026, Bawumia argued that government interference in school management has weakened the discipline and academic excellence that once defined mission institutions.
“Mission schools were the backbone of quality education in Ghana,” he said. “But years of state takeover of key management decisions have eroded their identity and performance.”
He told Council leaders that an NPP government would return greater management authority to religious bodies while keeping the state’s role in funding and policy. The goal, he said, is to restore discipline, values, and high academic standards.
Bawumia also praised the churches’ role in education and health, and called for stronger church-state partnership to rebuild the sector.
The Christian Council welcomed the engagement but urged that any reforms be done through broad consultation to protect access and equity for all students.
