Workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will embark on a nationwide demonstration on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, to protest the proposed private sector participation (PSP) in the operations of the company.
The protest is being organised by the Senior Staff Union (SSU) and the Junior Staff Union (JSU) of ECG, under the leadership of the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU).
According to a joint directive signed by the National Chairpersons of the SSU and JSU, Christopher Apawu and Lucky Larry Agboka, the peaceful demonstration will take place across all ECG operational regions.
The unions said the exercise will start at 8:00 am and end at 4:00 pm, and will end with the presentation of a petition to President John Dramani Mahama through Regional Ministers.
In Accra, workers will converge at the forecourt of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), while in Kumasi, they will gather at the ECG Regional Office at the Airport Roundabout. Workers in other regions are to assemble at their respective ECG regional offices. Routes for the marches will be announced later.
Participants are expected to return to their assembly points for a briefing before dispersing.
The September 29 demonstration is part of a series of actions outlined by the unions earlier this month to oppose the PSP plan. The unions said members will continue to wear red armbands as part of the initial phase of their protest until further directives are given.
PUWU, which is convening the demonstration, has officially notified the Inspector General of Police in line with Section 1(2) of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).
The unions said national and regional committees will be set up to coordinate the exercise, with further details to be communicated through the committees.
