Samia Nkrumah, daughter of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has spoken emotionally about the sacrifices her father made for Ghana and Africa, while expressing regret over the family's long absence from the country's public commemoration of his legacy.
Speaking at the 2026 Nkrumafest held at Nkroful, the birthplace of Ghana's first President, under the theme "NKRUMAH @ 117: CELEBRATING HIS ENDURING LEGACY – AFRICA MUST UNITE OR PERISH," Samia said the family recognizes the immense price her father paid in his pursuit of Ghana's independence and the total liberation of Africa.
According to her, the Nkrumah family had stayed away from many state events in the past not out of indifference, but because they were deeply affected by the painful experiences surrounding his overthrow in 1966 and its aftermath.
She indicated that the trauma of his political downfall and the years of exile left a lasting wound on the family, making it difficult for them to actively participate in public celebrations of his life and work.
Samia however noted that the family is now determined to reconnect with the national commemoration and to ensure that Nkrumah's enduring legacy of Pan-Africanism, selflessness and visionary leadership continues to inspire new generations.
