The *Municipal Chief Executive for Ga North, Akwetey Agbo*, has clarified that the toilet facility being constructed beneath the Pokuase Interchange is a project of the Assembly, not a private development as being speculated.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Agbo said the facility is part of a wider plan to decongest the Pokuase Junction and regulate transport operations along the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
*“No, it’s not being built by individuals. It is the Assembly that is trying to find a solution to the problem around the Pokuase Interchange,”* he stated.
According to him, commercial vehicles currently load on the road, causing heavy congestion for motorists and pedestrians. The Assembly therefore wants to relocate transport operators to designated spaces under the interchange and provide them with basic amenities.
*“The main reason why we decided to bring a toilet facility here is that you can see Pokuase Interchange is always choked. The transport operators are on the road loading, so we want to address that by decongesting Pokuase Junction,”* he explained.
Mr. Agbo noted that the interchange was originally designed with cubicles for transport operations, but efforts to move drivers there have been met with resistance from some operators and residents who complain about the distance.
*“We continue to engage them. We have had several community engagements to explain why we need to decongest the area,”* he added.
Addressing concerns about the abandoned state of the facility, overgrown bushes, and safety risks including vehicles falling into the area, the MCE said the Assembly has awarded a contract to repair the median and improve safety around the interchange.
He also disclosed that plans are in place to restore fencing around the area to stop pedestrians from crossing the highway, despite the presence of a footbridge.
