Galamsey Destroys Cocoa Farms in Suhum, Threatens Esaase and Densu Rivers – MP Cries Out

The Member of Parliament for Suhum, Hon. Frank Asiedu Bekoe, has raised serious concerns over illegal mining activities wreaking havoc in parts of his constituency.

According to the MP, he received intelligence that some individuals were engaged in irresponsible mining at Asanse, a community within Suhum. He said he personally visited the site to ascertain the facts.

Hon. Asiedu Bekoe disclosed that cocoa farms have been destroyed to make way for the illegal operations, with miners encroaching on the River Esaase and the Densu River.

"I got information that some people in parts of my constituency were engaging in irresponsible mining, so I went there. The specific place is Asanse. Cocoa trees have been brought down, and they are now deeply mining in the River Eshasi and the Densu River. It is so unfortunate," he lamented.

He said his visit confirmed the devastation, warning that the activities pose a grave danger to the environment, cocoa production, and the sustainability of the two water bodies.

The MP revealed that he has alerted the Municipal Chief Executive about the situation and called for swift action. He added that the MCE has scheduled a joint visit to the area with the District Police Commander to assess the situation and halt the operations.

Hon. Asiedu Bekoe is calling for urgent enforcement to stop the illegal miners and protect cocoa farms and water resources from further destruction.
