Ghana Water Ltd has announced planned maintenance works on the Kpong–Tema transmission pipelines that will lead to water supply interruptions in parts of Greater Accra from *Thursday, 6th August to Saturday, 8th August 2026*.
In a statement released on 4th August 2026, the company said it will isolate and replace weak sections on the 21-inch and 42-inch transmission pipelines between Kpong and Tema.
According to Ghana Water, routine assessments found more than 300 metres of deteriorated sections that need urgent replacement to prevent major bursts, reduce water losses, and improve supply reliability.
To carry out the work safely, the *Kpong Water Treatment Plant will be temporarily shut down*, while five sections of the transmission pipelines will be isolated for replacement.
*Affected Areas*
Customers supplied by the Kpong Water Supply System will experience *temporary water interruptions and reduced pressure*. The affected areas include:
- *Entire eastern part of Accra*: Gbetsele, Ashaiman, Katamanso, Zenu, Atadeka, Afienya, Appolonia, Prampram, Kpone, Dawhenya, Spintex, Baatsona, Sakumono, Nungua, Teshie and surrounding communities
- *All communities within Tema Metropolis*
- *Eastern corridor towns*: Kpong, Akuse, Somanya, Atimpoku and nearby towns
Ghana Water said engineers will work continuously throughout the 3 days to complete the replacement and restore normal supply as quickly as possible.
The company is urging residents to *store adequate water ahead of Thursday* and use it judiciously during the period.
Critical institutions like *hospitals and health facilities* are advised to make contingency arrangements. Where feasible, Ghana Water says it will deploy water tankers to support selected essential service providers.
The utility described the exercise as a necessary investment to reduce pipeline bursts, minimize emergency shutdowns, and improve long-term water supply to Tema and the eastern corridor.
Ghana Water apologized for the inconvenience and promised to provide regular updates and notify the public immediately normal supply is restored.
