President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to expand and reconfigure the road network within the Airport enclave and the central business district of Accra.
According to the President, the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Department of Urban Roads have already begun reviewing the current road network to prepare for increased traffic.
He said the review has become necessary due to the rapid springing up of new residential, commercial and hospitality facilities in the area, which will put pressure on existing roads and worsen congestion.
President Mahama made the announcement at the sod-cutting ceremony for the Airport Garden City project.
"I want to announce that the Ministry of Roads and Highways and Urban Roads have started looking at the road network in the airport enclave and the central business district. Because as developments like this come up, definitely the traffic congestion will also grow," he said.
He indicated that government will consider measures such as road widening and the introduction of one-way traffic systems to improve flow.
"And so we need to widen the roads, create a system of one-ways, and improve the road network," he added.
