Government is working to increase funding allocation to the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs to strengthen their capacity to resolve chieftaincy disputes quickly.
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, disclosed this at the Government Accountability Series held at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 5.
He said President John Dramani Mahama has directed him and the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to explore additional funding sources for the Houses of Chiefs, including possible adjustments to local government financing arrangements.
"The President has directed the Finance Minister and me to explore ways to increase funding allocation to the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs to enhance their capacity to dispose of chieftaincy disputes expeditiously," Mr. Ayariga said.
According to the Minister, the initiative is to ensure that chieftaincy disputes are dealt with swiftly before they become protracted and degenerate into security threats.
Mr. Ayariga added that government is considering making provision in the District Assemblies Common Fund formula to support the Houses of Chiefs, noting that traditional authorities play a critical role in the administration of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.
He said the enhanced funding will help the traditional institutions contribute more effectively to local governance and peace building.
