The Government of Ghana has clarified that it fully funded the evacuation of all Ghanaians affected by recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
In a press statement issued by the *Ministry of Foreign Affairs*, Government said it took note of reports that South Africa was seeking $18 million in reimbursement from some African countries for evacuating foreign nationals.
The Ministry stated “in unequivocal terms” that the evacuation of Ghanaian citizens was *fully funded by the Government of Ghana and its Ghanaian partners*. Ghana did not seek any financial or material support from the South African Government.
“Government further assures that the latest round of evacuations have followed the same principle with the Government of Ghana and our Ghanaian partners bearing the entire cost,” the statement read.
The Ministry noted that *since May 2026, more than 1,600 Ghanaians have been evacuated* from South Africa, and the exercise is ongoing. Upon arrival, evacuees are provided with *reintegration funds, transport fares, and relief items* to support their resettlement.
Government assured Ghanaians that *“under no circumstances will Ghana be listed among the countries being requested by the Government of South Africa to reimburse the cost”* of repatriation.
The Ministry reiterated President *John Mahama*’s commitment to protecting Ghanaians abroad and thanked all Ghanaian partners who supported the fully Ghanaian-funded evacuation.
