Government workers whose National Identification Authority (NIA) details are not correctly captured on the government payroll risk having their salaries suspended from September 15, 2026.
The Controller and Accountant-General's Department (CAGD) announced the move in a statement dated August 24, 2026, ahead of a planned nationwide employee re-verification exercise.
According to the Department, the rollout of the upgraded Employee Payslip (E-Payslip) system revealed discrepancies where some employees could not access their payslips because their NIA numbers on the payroll either do not match official NIA records or are completely missing.
In a separate notice, the Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Agyei, warned that "Employees who do not have valid NIA details on the payroll system will have their salaries suspended with effect from 15th September, 2026."
To avert the sanction, the CAGD has directed Human Resource departments of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to ensure that all employees have their correct Ghana Card numbers captured on the payroll.
HR departments are required to correct the details of affected staff and submit applications for correction, together with a cover letter from the head of the institution authorising the change, to the CAGD for validation.
The Department also reminded workers that under Regulation 9 of the National Identity Register (Amended) Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2523), physical submission of Ghana Cards is no longer required. Instead, employees must ensure their NIA numbers and related details are accurately captured through their Heads of HR.
HR officers have further been instructed to check their official email accounts for lists of employees flagged as having "No NIA" and take immediate action to rectify the situation.
The CAGD has urged full compliance before the deadline to avoid salary disruptions.
