John Desmond Sowah, the Dean of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Greater Accra Region, has called for a national fundraising initiative to combat flooding in Ghana. He emphasized that addressing flooding requires substantial financial resources, similar to the support mobilized during the FIFA World Cup fundraising efforts. Sowah highlighted the need for unity and commitment from Ghanaians, akin to the support shown for the Black Stars, to tackle the ongoing flooding crisis that affects lives and property every rainy season. He pointed out that effective flood management involves costs such as desilting drains, clearing waterways, and building infrastructure. Sowah believes that a dedicated fundraising campaign could provide the necessary resources for long-term solutions, including improved drainage systems and public education on flood prevention. His appeal comes as many regions, particularly Accra, continue to face severe flooding challenges. He urged citizens, businesses, NGOs, and development partners to contribute to this initiative, stressing that the cost of prevention is significantly lower than the expenses incurred during recovery from disasters.
