Member of Parliament for Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira Constituency, Hon. Lawrence Agyinsam has called on Parliament to strengthen its oversight of State Interest Institutions (SIIs) while respecting their operational independence, saying accountability and performance must go hand in hand.
Speaking as co-moderator of a capacity-building workshop for the Committee on Public Administration and State Interest, Hon. Agyinsam said parliamentary committees have a critical role in ensuring SIIs deliver on their mandates without undue interference.
The workshop, held under the theme _“Managing State Interest Institutions: Performance, Accountability and the Role of Parliamentary Oversight”_, brought members together to deepen their understanding of how SIIs are governed and monitored.
*Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte, Director-General of the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA)*, told participants that Key Performance Indicators, performance contracts, and corporate governance frameworks are the main tools for tracking service delivery, financial health, and operational efficiency in SIIs.
Hon. Agyinsam, who moderated discussions alongside *Hon. Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh*, said the committee’s focus is to ensure SIIs remain accountable to Parliament and to the Ghanaian people.
The workshop also stressed the importance of ethics and strategic communication in building public trust. *Dr. Nancy Myles of the University of Ghana* shared insights on how ethical conduct and clear communication can improve public confidence in state-owned institutions.
The Committee said the training is part of ongoing efforts to enhance Parliament’s capacity to monitor SIIs and ensure they are responsive to national development goals.
