President John Dramani Mahama says government will buy match tickets for Ghanaians living abroad to support the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Addressing a diaspora town hall meeting on Sunday, May 31, the President said the plan is to help Ghanaian communities in host cities attend games and cheer on the national team.
He explained that government cannot fully sponsor large groups traveling from Ghana this time. With the tournament spread across three countries, costs for transport, lodging, feeding, and tickets have gone up sharply. Mahama put the cost of supporting one fan through the entire tournament at nearly $11,000, which he called unsustainable given current economic conditions.
Instead, support will target organized supporters’ groups and Ghanaians already based in host cities.
“What we are doing is that we are procuring tickets for Ghanaians in the diaspora who want to attend the games. So if you want to attend the game, you will get a ticket to attend the game,” Mahama said.
He added that government has coordinated with Ghanaian chapters in Boston, Philadelphia, and Canada. The purchased tickets will go to those groups to distribute for match access.
Mahama encouraged Ghanaians abroad planning to travel to match venues to link up with recognized community groups. He said arrangements are being made to ensure the tickets are shared fairly.
