The Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) has confirmed a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line which led to power outages in parts of the country in the early hours of Thursday, 20th August 2026.
In a press statement issued by its Corporate Communications Section and dated 20th August 2026, GRIDCo said the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m.
*What Happened*
According to GRIDCo, the fault triggered the automatic tripping of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal generating plants. This was part of the system’s protection mechanisms to safeguard the integrity and stability of the National Interconnected Transmission System.
The development resulted in loss of power supply to some parts of the country.
*Restoration Efforts Underway*
GRIDCo said its engineers, working with other power sector agencies, immediately isolated the affected transmission line and commenced safe and systematic restoration of the power system.
“Power supply has already been restored to some affected areas, and restoration efforts are progressing steadily to ensure that supply is restored to all remaining affected customers as quickly and safely as possible,” the statement noted.
*Assurance To Public*
GRIDCo regretted the inconvenience caused by the temporary outage and assured the public that all relevant technical teams have been fully mobilized and are working with urgency to achieve complete restoration.
The company said it will continue to provide updates as further information becomes available and appealed for the public’s patience and cooperation.
