The Minority in Parliament has reaffirmed its position that the National Cathedral project is a necessary national project that should be completed.
Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, speaking at a meeting with the clergy, said the project should not be seen as just a place of prayer but as a national asset with huge tourism potential.
"This National Cathedral, we need it as a nation. It shouldn't be too simplistic that cathedral is just for prayer, it is also for tourism," he stated.
Citing his recent experience in Turkey, the Effutu MP said an old mosque he visited attracts 4,000 visitors a day who troop there just to take pictures.
"So if we have the cathedral, it is not only for the Christian community, it is for the entire nation. Its tourism potential, its image and the image of the country, it becomes a rallying point for us as a country," he argued.
Afenyo-Markin also accused the government of inconsistency regarding the future of the project site.
"The government is showing inconsistency. It says one thing today, says another tomorrow. We don't know what they want to use the site for. There is no clarity as to what they want to use the site for," he said.
He called for a collective dialogue on the way forward, adding that the matter should be one that all sides sit together to discuss further.
