Government has taken back the National Cathedral site from its Board of Trustees and placed it under the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, pending further directives on its future use.
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, disclosed this while providing an update on the current state of the controversial project at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday.
According to Mr. Ayariga, he has written to members of the Board of Trustees informing them of the dissolution of the Board.
"And so I have sent a letter to the board members informing them that they have been dissolved and given that the National Cathedral site is a property of the government of Ghana, I've also directed the contractor to hand over the site to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs awaiting further government directive," he stated.
He explained that the next steps will be determined after the Attorney-General has reviewed the forensic audit conducted into expenditures related to the initial plans to construct the cathedral under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
"After the Attorney-General has reviewed the audit that has been conducted, the forensic audit that has been conducted into the expenditures related to the initial plans to construct the National Cathedral by President Akufo-Addo and then based on the Attorney-General's advice we would know what the next steps are, but for now the Board of Trustees stands dissolved and the site reverts to the Ministry of Local Government," he added.
