No Layoffs at Ghana Digital Centres Despite Flood Damage — Sam George Gives Assurances

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has told staff of Ghana Digital Centres Limited that their jobs are safe following the floods that hit the Accra Digital Centre.

The assurance came after GDCL management tried to suspend all staff contracts two weeks ago in response to the June 29 flood damage. The Ministry stepped in and cancelled that decision, calling it unacceptable and ordering management to reinstate everyone immediately.

Speaking to the Board, management and workers on Monday, July 13, 2026, the Minister said the government is committed to protecting jobs as repairs continue.

“We will not lay off any GDCL staff, whether temporarily or permanently, because of the flood. Your jobs are secure,” he stated.

However, he also used the moment to push for change. According to him, the flood should not just mean going back to how things were. Instead, it should be a chance to rebuild GDCL into a company that can stand on its own financially.

“This is a reset of the reset. It won’t be business as usual. Every staff member has a role to play,” Mr. George said.

He added that the Ministry will back the recovery process, but will also demand better governance, improved efficiency, and a stronger business model. He believes GDCL has enough assets to be profitable and put management on notice that they will be held responsible for results.

“With what you have, GDCL has no reason not to make profit… It will not collapse under my watch,” he said.

The Accra Digital Centre houses tech companies, start-ups and innovation businesses. Operations were disrupted by the floods, but recovery work is ongoing as government seeks to restore trust among tenants, investors and players in the digital space.
