Police say on September 1, 2026, at about 10:40 a.m., about 300 irate youth wielding guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed the New Winneba Township, attacking residents and destroying stores and properties.
In the course of the attack, about 15 people, including a police officer, sustained injuries and were sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba. Three persons were later confirmed dead by the medical officer on duty.
Police also retrieved a locally made single-barrel gun and an AAA empty cartridge from the crime scene.
To maintain security, personnel from the Winneba, Agona Swedru and Mankessim Divisions, including the IGP’s special team, with reinforcement and two armoured vehicles from the National Headquarters, have been deployed to the area.
The Command says it has mounted six snap checkpoints, intensified day and night patrols, and deployed PID and CID personnel to monitor the situation. The area is currently calm and under control.
All six suspects are in police custody assisting with investigations, the statement signed by Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie of the Public Affairs Unit/CR said.
