President John Dramani Mahama has called for the regular refreshing of Ghana’s currency, stating that countries must update their banknotes every 10 years to stay ahead of counterfeiters.
Speaking at the *"Resetting Ghana"* event in the Upper East Region, the President explained that when a currency is used for too long, people learn how to replicate it.
“_Every country, every 10 years you are supposed to refresh your currency because if you use the same currency for too long people learn how to counterfeit it,_” he said.
President Mahama noted that updating security features on the cedi forces counterfeiters to spend years figuring out the new designs, helping to protect the integrity of the currency. He described the current currency as “_long overdue for refreshing_” and expressed confidence that the *Bank of Ghana Governor* has plans in place to do so.
“_I know the governor has plans to refresh the currency and I'm sure that at the appropriate time the Bank of Ghana will let Ghanaians know what they are doing about it,_” he added.
The President also touted the strength of the cedi, attributing it to sound economic policies.
“_What I must say is that the cedi today is stronger than it was in the past because of good economic management. Your currency is as strong as your economic management,_” President Mahama stated.
He assured that government will continue to implement policies that bolster the economy and, by extension, the strength of the cedi against major currencies.
The Bank of Ghana is expected to announce details of any planned currency redesign at the appropriate time.
