The Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs Committee of Parliament has called on government to spell out how it intends to finance the stalled Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam project before the 2027 Budget is presented.
According to the Committee, government’s stated commitment to revive the project must be backed by a clear and sustainable funding plan.
Speaking to journalists during a visit to the Konadu Irrigation Project in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District of the Eastern Region, Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, said financing remains the key to getting the project back on track.
“The government has committed; we are informed they have committed to making sure that the project is revived, but again, it’s a function of financing,” Dr. Jasaw said.
He explained that the previous administration sought to fund the dam from the national budget, but current capital expenditure allocations to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture are inadequate for a project of that magnitude.
“The last government’s financing is from the government of Ghana budget, and so this year, I mean so far 2025, 2026, we’ve observed that the CAPEX component of the budget for the Minister of Agric is unable to finance such a huge project,” he stated.
Dr. Jasaw said the Committee is now waiting for government to announce what alternative financing model it has settled on.
“We are still exploring how government will come back to us and announce to us what financing model has been agreed,” he added.
