Police in the Central Region have arrested seven persons following violent clashes between residents of Gomoa and Effutu groups in New Winneba that claimed three lives and left 17 others injured.
The update was given by the Public Affairs Officer of the Central Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Isaac Evans Ettie.
According to the police, the injured are currently on admission at the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba and the Winneba Municipal Hospital.
The clashes occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, around 10:40 a.m., when about 300 people reportedly armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze stormed the New Winneba township.
The group is said to have attacked residents and vandalised shops, stores and other properties.
Police say the violence is linked to a protracted land dispute between the two ethnic groups.
Personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and the Agona Swedru District Patrols were quickly deployed to contain the situation and restore calm.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has dispatched additional personnel from the National Police Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles, to reinforce security in the area.
The Police Service says the situation is now under control, with officers remaining on the ground to prevent any further disturbances and maintain peace.
