Workers of the Volta Aluminium Company and officials of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union have hit the streets to protest what they say are moves to privatise the state-owned smelter.
The demonstration took place on *Monday, July 25, 2026* at the VALCO Club House in Tema Community 4, Greater Accra Region. Workers and union members gathered as early as 6:00 a.m, dressed in red and red armbands.
The protesters carried placards and sang war songs as they marched, warning government and other stakeholders against any attempt to sell off the strategic company.
Some of the messages on their placards read: _“GIADEC and its CEO Reindolf Twumasi Ankrah is a big scandal to this government”_, _“Mr President, Protect VALCO, Say no to shady VALCO deals”_, _“VALCO is not for sale”_, _“ICU-GH and VALCO workers are poised to resist any attempt to sell VALCO”_, and _“Who is behind ARCH Holdings Limited?”_
Other placards also urged the President to be truthful about happenings at VALCO and stressed that protecting state assets is a national responsibility.
*General Secretary of ICU-Ghana, Morgan Ayawini*, presented a petition to the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, *Ebi Bright*, for onward delivery to the President.
The workers say they will fiercely resist any attempt to sell shares in VALCO, which they describe as a key national asset.
