Presidential Advisor on the 24-Hour Economy, Goosie Tannoh, has clarified that the *24-Hour Economy Secretariat* does not control the proposed 24-hour markets, despite public perception linking the two.
Speaking at an engagement with news editors in Accra, Mr. Tannoh said the markets are the responsibility of the *Ministry of Local Government and district assemblies*, not the Secretariat.
*“We Have No Control”*
Mr. Tannoh explained that while the markets have been “promised to 262 district assemblies” and are being financed by the *District Assembly Common Fund*, the Secretariat has no role in deciding where they are located or how they are run.
“Although they use a twin fire logo, we have no use of self control over we are not part of deciding where it goes and so on and so forth,” he said.
He added that the markets could help improve supply chain efficiency, especially with cold chain facilities to reduce the 30 to 40% losses of perishables. “It's a good thing but for the moment we have no responsibility whatsoever,” he stated.
*Facing Lawsuits Over Projects Not Ours*
The Presidential Advisor revealed that the Secretariat has been sued “four or five times” over projects it has no authority over.
“Our lawyer is moving a motion in November to get us removed from the defendants list because we have no jurisdiction, we have no status,” he said.
He stressed that the confusion stems from the shared branding, but legally and operationally, the 24-hour markets do not fall under the Secretariat’s mandate.
