The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaibu, has appealed to the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, to urgently deploy five Metro Mass Transit buses to his constituency to ease the growing transportation difficulties facing residents.
In his petition, the second Deputy Minority Whip is asking for three buses to operate on the Weija-Accra route and two buses for the Gbawe-Accra route.
According to Mr. Shaibu, rapid population growth in Weija, Gbawe, Tetegu, Oblogo and surrounding communities has overwhelmed the existing public transport system, with commuter traffic increasing daily.
He said residents, including workers, traders, students and the elderly, are forced to wait for long hours in overcrowded terminals, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
He explained that the situation is worse on the Weija to Accra and Gbawe to Accra corridors, where thousands of commuters struggle daily to get reliable and affordable transport to the city centre and other business hubs.
The lawmaker warned that the lack of dependable buses has pushed many residents to patronize unlicensed commercial vehicles and overloaded tricycles, putting their safety at risk and affecting their productivity and well-being.
“It is in light of the foregoing that I respectfully appeal to your good office to direct Metro Mass Transit Limited to station five dedicated buses within the Weija-Gbawe Constituency as a matter of priority,” he appealed to the Minister.
