The Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly has confirmed four deaths and widespread destruction after torrential rainstorms battered the Central Region capital last weekend.
In a press statement, Metropolitan Chief Executive George Justice Arthur said heavy rains on Friday, June 19, and Sunday, June 21, 2026, caused severe flooding across multiple communities.
*Areas Affected*
The floods hit Ekon, Abura, UCC and its environs, Ameen Sangari, DVLA/Nokaans, Eyifua, Mpeasem, Adisadel, Nkanfoa, Asenadze, and some areas that had never recorded flooding before.
*Casualties and Damage*
The storm collapsed eight houses, mostly mud structures. Four people died, including three children. Five others are in critical condition and receiving treatment at Ewim Polyclinic and Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.
In total, 736 residents have been displaced and 95 individuals directly affected by the disaster.
*Assembly’s Response*
Hon. George Justice Arthur has visited injured victims and bereaved families. The Assembly is demolishing collapsed buildings to prevent further danger and is identifying other risky structures for removal.
*Long-term Plans*
The Assembly says it will tackle the root causes of flooding by designing a comprehensive drainage system for Cape Coast. For now, choked gutters will be desilted.
Buildings on waterways, storm drains, road reservations, and those put up without permits will also be demolished. The public has been warned to secure proper permits before building.
The Assembly added that anyone caught littering or dumping refuse at unauthorised sites will face the law.
The statement was signed by MCE George Justice Arthur on June 21, 2026.
