Former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo was allegedly shot at while trying to serve a court injunction on her younger brother, Israel Kwadwo Safo, during a deepening leadership dispute in the Kristo Asafo Mission. This is according to a statement released by the Kwadwo Safo family on Monday, June 22.
The shooting happened at a property linked to Israel Safo. The family said gunfire broke out during a gathering meant to install him as leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission following the death of its founder, Apostle Kwadwo Safo. Witnesses claim armed men opened fire at the event. Unconfirmed reports say about 15 rounds were fired.
Adwoa Safo, described by the family as the legitimate head of the Kwadwo Safo family, is stable and responding to treatment after the incident.
*Failed Attempts to Serve Injunction*
The family explained that Israel Safo and some church elders organized a private ceremony to install him as leader, despite what they say were clear succession instructions left by the late founder.
Two church members went to court and secured an injunction to stop the ceremony. After several failed attempts to serve Israel Safo with the court documents, Adwoa Safo decided to deliver the notice herself.
“During the encounter, Mr. Israel Safo discharged a firearm multiple times in her direction and also instructed associates at the scene to open fire on her vehicle,” the family alleged in the statement.
Police have been notified and are investigating the matter.
*Background to the Dispute*
The shooting is the latest twist in the battle over who leads the Kristo Asafo Mission after Apostle Kwadwo Safo died on September 11, 2025.
The family said the late founder named Israel Safo as his successor in 2017 and gave him key roles in the church and its businesses. But they claim that mandate was withdrawn in 2024 over concerns about how some businesses were run and what they call a drift from the church’s original principles.
They further allege that Apostle Kwadwo Safo later appointed Adwoa Safo as family head and set up a succession plan that excluded Israel Safo from the leadership role.
The family insists it does not recognize any installation of Israel Safo that goes against the late founder’s directives.
They are calling on members of the Kristo Asafo Mission and the public to stay calm and let state institutions handle the investigation and the succession dispute through legal channels.
