The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) says it will begin locking shops and premises of businesses that owe Business Operating Permit (BOP) fees, property rates, and rent from Monday, June 22, 2026.
In a press release dated Friday, June 19, 2026, and signed by Head of Public Affairs Gilbert Nii Ankrah for the Metro Chief Executive, the Assembly said the move is part of a Revenue Enforcement Exercise aimed at improving revenue mobilization and ensuring compliance with its by-laws.
*Defaulters Face Closure*
The exercise will target business operators and property owners who have defaulted on their statutory obligations to the Assembly.
“As part of the enforcement exercise, businesses and premises found to be in arrears will be locked and temporarily closed until all outstanding payments are settled,” the release stated.
Authorized officers of the Assembly, with support from relevant enforcement agencies, will carry out the closures.
*Digital Payment Channels Available*
The AMA is urging affected ratepayers to settle outstanding debts immediately to avoid disruption. Payments can be made via digital platforms:
- *Property Rates*: `_222_55#`
- *Business Operating Permit*: `_222_33#`
The Assembly described the payments as a legal obligation and a critical source of funding for essential services, infrastructure development, sanitation management, and public health interventions.
*Penalties for Non-Compliance*
AMA warned that penalties may be imposed on defaulters under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) and the Assembly’s by-laws.
For further information and payment enquiries, ratepayers are advised to visit any AMA office within the metropolis.
The Assembly said it is counting on the cooperation of all businesses and property owners to ensure the success of the exercise and to support efforts toward a cleaner, safer, and more resilient Accra.
