Deputy Agric Minister of Unveils ‘End-to-End’ Poultry Revamp Plan in Parliament — 50 Anchor Farmers, 500 SMEs, 3M Backyard Birds Targeted

Deputy Food and Agriculture Minister Hon. John Setor Dumelo has outlined an ambitious blueprint to overhaul Ghana’s poultry industry, detailing three major interventions to boost production, processing, and consumption.
Dumelo, who is also MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, was responding to a question from Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira MP, Hon. Lawrence Agyinsam, on the floor of Parliament Wednesday.
Agyinsam had pressed the Ministry to disclose its full strategy for the sector.
“I rise to ask the Minister for Agriculture/Food and Agriculture the plans that the Ministry has to enhance poultry value chain from production to processing and value addition, marketing and distribution and consumption and demand,” he said.
Taking the dispatch box, Dumelo described government’s approach as a “comprehensive end-to-end strategy” designed to touch every stage of the value chain.
To enhance the poultry value chain from production to processing and value addition, marketing and distribution and consumption and demand is anchored on a comprehensive end-to-end strategy designed to revitalize and expand Ghana’s poultry industry.
“This involve targeted interventions to increase production, improve efficiency, enhance value addition, strengthen market access and stimulate domestic consumption.”
Hon Dumelo Details 3 Major Interventions, he told the House that 50 commercial anchor farmers will be selected nationwide under an outgrower support model.
“Under this anchor farmers and outgrower supports, fifty commercial anchor farmers will be selected nationwide and each will be supported with eighty thousand beds with additional logistical and technical assistance.”
The Deputy Minister said the Food Systems Resilience Program will target smaller producers.
“This intervention is supporting five hundred small to medium scale poultry farmers across all regions to scale up their operations.”
To enhance food security at the community level especially amongst vulnerable groups the ministry is implementing a backyard poultry program targeting the production of an additional three million beds with a strong focus on women and youth.
