Election Watch Ghana is calling for transformational leadership at the Electoral Commission following the resignation and retirement of former officials.
In a statement released today, the group said the tenure of the departed EC officials was marked by disappointments, inconsistency, and lack of public trust. It urged the President to appoint new deputy commissioners who prioritize innovation, efficiency, and transparency.
The organization emphasized that the next EC deputies must leverage modern technologies to streamline voting processes, result transmission, and collation to ensure timely and credible elections.
Election Watch Ghana also rejected the promotion of current junior officers to the vacant leadership roles, arguing they do not possess the requisite credibility and public integrity. “The people of Ghana deserve better,” the statement said.
The group further criticized the appointment process as opaque, noting that while the President appoints EC leadership “in consultation” with the Council of State, he is not bound by its advice. It said this practice has contributed to perceptions of partisanship and undermined the Commission’s independence.
It called for a more transparent and inclusive appointment process that prioritizes merit and public interest.
According to Election Watch Ghana, new appointees must demonstrate the highest standards of integrity, impartiality, and professionalism. The group said it will closely monitor the process and hold the new deputy leadership accountable to Ghanaians.
“The people of Ghana expect a transformational leader who will influence the current chair to restore trust in the electoral process,” the statement added.
