Former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu has been extradited from the United States to Ghana to begin a 10-year prison sentence handed down by the Accra High Court.
She arrived at Kotoka International Airport on Tuesday, June 9, at about 9:01 a.m. on United Airlines flight UA 996 from Washington Dulles International Airport. The flight departed the US at 11:44 GMT.
*Arrest and processing:*
Security personnel received her on arrival and took her into custody. Sources say she is now going through debriefing and medical checks as part of standard procedure before being handed over to the Ghana Prisons Service to start her sentence.
*Background to the case:*
In 2024, the Accra High Court convicted Tamakloe-Attionu in absentia after finding her guilty of causing financial loss to the state and stealing. The court ruled that her actions as MASLOC CEO from 2013 to 2016 led to a loss of nearly GH¢90 million to the state.
The case involved allegations of misappropriation and diversion of funds at the state microfinance institution.
*How she left Ghana:*
Tamakloe-Attionu was granted court permission in 2021 to travel to the US for medical treatment while her trial was ongoing. She did not return, and the court continued the case in her absence.
*Extradition process:*
After her conviction, the Government of Ghana formally requested her extradition in 2025. A US District Court in Nevada reviewed Ghana’s application and supporting documents, then certified the request. That decision cleared the way for her return to serve the sentence.
Her arrival ends a years-long extradition effort and marks a major step in one of Ghana’s most high-profile corruption cases involving a former state official.
Officials have not said whether any new legal proceedings will follow her return. For now, authorities are expected to complete all administrative, security, and medical processes before transferring her to prison.
