The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has ordered a full audit and review of school regulations governing Senior High Schools across the country following the sexual abuse scandal at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (Obuasi SHTS).
Addressing journalists at a press briefing in Accra, the Minister described the alleged abuse of 19 female students by the school's headmaster as unacceptable, and assured parents that their children are safe.
"I wish to give assurance to parents and the Ghanaian public as a whole that our children, their children are safe in all our educational institutions across the country," he said.
Mr Iddrisu said the Ministry will not approach the matter emotionally but will take firm and level-headed steps to prevent recurrence.
"As Minister for Education, I give the assurance that we will audit our school regulations and monitor conduct and behaviour of teachers and even students," he stated.
He disclosed that the Ministry will consider establishing focal persons in schools to report such abuses, and will move a step further to have discussions with parents and students.
"We will move a step further to have discussions with parents and all students in order to identify the implementation gaps and breach those gaps with no room for recurrence in the near and in the distant future," he added.
The Minister said government will tackle the matter in a concerted manner to safeguard the education and well-being of students.
"With a concerted, level-headed and firm approach, we will tackle this unfortunate matter as a government and a nation in order to safeguard the education and well-being of our future mothers and future leaders of our country," he said.
The headmaster of Obuasi SHTS has been suspended and is under investigation over allegations of sexual abuse of 19 students.
