The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, has clarified his status on the board of the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD), stating that he is no longer a member.
Addressing a question on whether he will resign from the GoldBod board, the Governor said he had already stepped down about five months ago and does not attend board meetings.
"I'm no longer a member of the Gold Board Board. I do not sit on the board of the Gold Board," he said.
He explained that by law, the GoldBod Act provides for the Bank of Ghana to be represented on the board either by the Governor or any other official up to the rank of Director.
"By law, the law that governs the activities of the Gold Board, there's a provision there for Bank of Ghana to be represented either by the Governor or any other official up to the rank of a Director, so there's that legal requirement. It does not necessarily need the Governor to be there," Dr. Asiama clarified.
"As I speak to you, I resigned from the Gold Board Board about five months ago or so. I do not attend board meetings at the Gold Board at all," he added.
The Governor's clarification comes amid public scrutiny over the composition of the GOLDBOD board and concerns about potential conflict of interest with the central bank's role.
