Sixteen structurally unsafe buildings in Greater Accra will be pulled down this week, Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has said, following a deadly building collapse at Avenor.
The move comes after a three-storey building collapsed at Avenor in North Kaneshie on Sunday, June 7, killing two people and injuring three others.
Speaking to journalists at the disaster scene, Muntaka said NADMO has already flagged 16 dangerous structures across the region that are unfit for habitation. Evacuations are underway, with demolitions set to begin this week.
“Currently, NADMO has identified about 16 buildings within the Greater Accra Region that have to come down. We are going to ensure that, coming into the week, they will go and get all those buildings down,” he said.
“Some things are natural, and God will take care of the supernatural, but for the natural ones, we have to take care of them,” the Minister added.
He said the exercise is part of government’s wider plan to prevent avoidable disasters and stop unsafe structures from becoming death traps.
The Avenor incident has reignited concerns over ageing, poorly maintained, and improperly built structures, with renewed calls for stricter enforcement of building safety rules.
