Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has criticized both the NPP and NDC for failing to complete the Afari Military Hospital in the Ashanti Region, calling the delay a wasted chance to boost healthcare delivery.
Speaking to journalists after donating a pickup truck and 15 motorbikes to the Ghana Police Service at the Accra Regional Police Headquarters on Tuesday, the former NPP flagbearer hopeful said he was disappointed the facility is still not fully operational.
Agyapong, who chaired Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee under the previous NPP government, admitted his own party did not do enough. He said the hospital was conceived under former President John Kufuor, with major construction later carried out by an NDC administration. But when the NPP took power, progress stalled.
“This hospital was started by President John Agyekum Kufuor. NDC came to start it, and when we came, I am NPP, and I am telling you the gospel truth. I was the chairman for Defence and Interior, and we didn’t do anything,” he said.
He pushed back on claims that the hospital has only been idle for 15 months, noting the NPP had eight years in office and failed to complete it. Agyapong also revealed that attempts by his committee to inspect the Afari project were blocked.
The Afari Military Hospital was planned as a major facility for both military personnel and civilians. Despite significant state investment, it remains largely unused years after construction began.
