Minority Leader Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin has raised alarm over what he described as serious encroachment on lands belonging to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation at Kanda, calling for urgent ministerial intervention.
Contributing to discussions in Parliament, the Effutu MP said parts of GBC’s land have already been lost to encroachment. He cited the Ghana Revenue Authority’s new headquarters as an example, noting it was constructed on GBC land and has since been taken over by the Ministry of Finance.
“GBC is sitting on gold, but you are saying that you do not have resources. And you have assets which are being encroached upon,” Hon. Afenyo-Markin told the House.
He reminded the Minister for Government Communication that protecting GBC’s assets falls within his mandate. The Minority Leader questioned what steps the minister is taking to protect the state broadcaster’s property and add value to its assets.
Hon. Afenyo-Markin stressed that Parliament expects ministers to provide statements in the House on such matters, rather than resorting to press conferences. He said he was bringing the issue to the attention of ministers present so the appropriate action can be taken.
The MP insisted that government must outline concrete measures to halt further encroachment and ensure GBC’s valuable land holdings are preserved and leveraged for the broadcaster’s benefit.
